Report

Wigan crew Andrew Barker and Anthony Marshall gained a maiden victory on North Wales CC's Denbigh Plant Services Stages at Trawsfynydd, driving their Nova steadily whilst others threw away chances of victory. Three seconds behind was the Escort of PEC/Kumho ANWCC Championship leader Ronnie Moon, with Steve Eatough in the co-driver's seat - their chance of victory lost on the second stage with a one-minute off in a ditch, climbing back from 29th. overall to snatch the runners-up spot.

Third went to the incredibly quickly-driven Nissan Micra of Gareth Lloyd-Davies/Iwan Williams. At one point it looked as though the smallest car in the event would be leading overall, but the class was easily won,

Just seventeen seconds covered the top seven at the end of a day of frustration for many.

Top seeds David and Ken Pritchard completed the morning's stages well ahead of the pack, but threw it away on the eighth stage, one minute spent in a deep ditch before spectators got their Escort going again.

Rupert Lomax/Dave Alcock then led for two stages. With 36 seconds to the second-placed Lloyd-Davies' Micra victory seemed assured with just the final lap of three stages, but their Escort suffered gear selector problems costing over three minutes

Lloyd-Davies' Micra appeared to have taken the lead but the little car spent ten seconds off the road and so it was Barker/Marshall that ended the tenth stage ahead of the rest.

Having rolled whilst leading his previous two events, Barker was biting his nails over the last stage, knowing there were a number of drivers ready to pinch victory.

Moon had stormed back and snatched runner-up spot at the finish, Lloyd-Davies was disappointed that a major upset had been thrown away whilst Pritchard took fastest on the last stages to climb back to fourth.

Fifth overall went to 1600 class winners Geoff McQuilling/Eryl Williams in their Escort which had been third before the last stage, whilst sixth were husband-wife crew Mark and Sandra Francis in their Escort.

Stuart Deeley had an unusually quiet day to finish seventh, his gold painted Escort seeing Ben Hardman co-drive, they took second in class, whilst Ben's younger brother Jody gained third in the class, eleventh overall, co-driving Tristan Dodd in another of John Hardman's cars. Tristan, who is the sponsor of the PEC Tyres with Kumho ANWCC Stage Rally Championship, was on his first outing for a long time and was testing Kumho tyres. An early indiscretion meant that they were down in 35th. spot after the second stage but made steady progress as he familiarised himself with the car and the tyres.

Gareth Jones/Steve Herbert brought their two-litre Chevette into eight, just ahead of the Nova of Julian White/Nigel Madigan who gained their first-ever top ten placing despite not being happy with the venue. Rounding off the top ten was the Fiat Uno of Nigel Humphreys/Dave Williams.

Keith Griffiths/Paul Hughes had been holding a place inside the top ten until a minor off in their Escort, whilst Lomax/Alcock still picked up a few championship points, having dropped from first to 28th. but pulled back ten places over the final two stages.

38 crews started the event, with just four retirements. Peter O'Dougherty/Darren Owens broke their Escort steering, a similar fate occurring to the Escort of Cliff Evans/Paul Edwards. Myfyr Owen/Geraint Lloyd-Williams suffered gearbox problems in the SEAT Ibiza, having already clobbered a gate-post, but were happy that the retirement was not the usual driveshaft problem. Barry Green/Steve Merrison were the other non-finishers, their 205 Gti having a brake fluid leak onto the hot discs, the resultant smoke being more spectacular than dangerous.
