Camsport Stages 15th July 2006

In contrast to the Clwydian Stages, the sun shone all day on this event, and offered fantastic conditions to the Competitors, Marshalls and spectators alike. 50 Crews took to the start of this event.

Only 2 Bala MC crews started the event; Chris Phillips / Rhys Hughes in their Peugeot 106 Cup Car at Car 12, and Aled Gwyn / Em Hall at Car 20 in the Astra. Also making a welcome visit to the venue was Andreas Mikkelsen, a driver tipped for WRC Stardom in his N1O Subaru. The rally was a round of the ANWCC and F1000 Championships.

Mikkelsen was to lead the event until mechanical gremlins set in, the lead was then taken over by Dean Jones in his MK2 Escort. F1000 was won by Matt Davies in his Micra. Aled Gwyn recorded his first stage event finish in 7th overall, despite him and Em surviving one of the biggest moments seen on 'Henblas' crest! Chris and Rhys finished 13th overall.

The top three from the event;

1. Dean Jones / Wayne Jones 21.11
2. Carwyn Ellis / Edgar Jones 21.33
3. Kevin Jones / John Davies 21.39

CAMSPORT RANGES STAGES (MotorsportNews)

Escorts dominated on the Ranges, filling the top five places and led by Dean and Wayne Jones, recording their maiden victory. Second were top seeds Carwyn Ellis/Edgar Jones with Kevin Jones/John Davies third.

Jones/Jones took quickest on the first stage, but 17-year-old Norwegian sensation Andreas Mikkelsen had obtained a late entry and was only a second adrift, taking the lead on the second. Jones pulled back to tie after four but then the extra power of the Subaru pulled out a 12-second lead after nine stages. However, starting the final lap the traction control failed, and the clutch also succumbed to the enthusiastic driving. Showing far more maturity than his years, Mikkelsen drove the final stages, without taking a maximum, to ensure the signature was obtained.

The 1400cc class was always going to Gareth Roberts/Paul Dolby (106 Rallye), Arwyn Williams/David Roberts next in a Sunbeam whilst Dave Baines/Nigel Stephenson (Escort) overhauled Jon Madoc-Jones/Phil Kendall (Avanzato) for third spot.

Local crew Ken Pugh/Gwawr Hughes (Sunbeam) took their customary 1600cc class win, Sean Crowley/Karen Morgan (Astra) next and Ian Jones/Darren Thompson (106 GTi) third after the big off by Gavin Edwards/Rhys Morgan (Nova) whilst running second.

With Jones/Jones taking overall honours, the two-litre class went to Ellis/Jones from Jones/Davies, whilst Hugh Jones/Rob Hopewell also gained by the head gasket failure of Huw James/Andrew Edwards (Escort) on the final stage, losing second for the Aberystwyth crew.

The big-engined class went to the Clio Williams of Clive Williams/Ricky Pierce, Jonathan Whalley/Peter Dennis (Escort) next, third a rare finish for Myfyr Owen/Geraint Jones (Focus).

Simon Bevan/Hefin West (Astra) took Road Rally car honours from the similar car of Paul Carroll/Justin John. Alan Evans/Alaw Roberts (Nova) won mixed crew awards.

Formula 1000

Fourteen crews turned up in one-litre cars with competition as fierce as ever, Matt Davies/Paul Hadley (Micra) finishing just two seconds up on Simon Povey/Jonathan Suter (Micra) with Peter Jones/Stuart Harradine (Micra) third 14 seconds adrift.

Initially fourth were Rob Eastwood/Martyn Taylor (Mini) but clutch bearing failure saw them fail to start the fourth stage. Driver of the day was judged to be ex-Motoring News Rally Champion Steve King in his Talbot Sunbeam.

CAMSPORT STAGES (Pacenotes)

The second of the years' events at the Ranges Motorsport Centre in north Wales saw Mk2 Escorts dominate, taking the top five placings at the end of a hot and very competitive day. This was the second Aberystwyth & DMC CAMSport Stages and a fine entry of 50 crews came chasing ANWCC or Formula 1000 Championship points, or just for a day's fun on the ranges.

Top seeds Carwyn Ellis/Edgar Jones led the field away in the Mk2 Escort, but quickest time was recorded by the eventual winners, Dean and Wayne Jones (Mk2 Escort). A surprise late entry was rallying's latest sensation … 17-year-old Norwegian Andreas Mikkelsen (Subaru Impreza) only a second adrift on the first test, then took the lead on the second and maintained it for the first lap of three stages.

Mikkelsen gradually pulled out a lead of twelve seconds so was looking to gain his second win in as many weekends. However, the start of the final lap saw the traction control system fail and take out the clutch so it was a very slow run over the final three stages. The youngster showed great maturity in pulling over for crews to pass without any loss of time, and the popular teenager got the car home to achieve the aim of the day – get another signature on his licence.

Dean and Wayne Jones took the lead and took it well. Huw James/Andrew Richards held runner-up spot until the final stage, when the head gasket failed on their Escort and retirement beckoned. Reigning ANWCC Champions Ellis/Jones moved up to second spot, whilst Kevin Jones/John Davies gained another podium finish. Gareth Richards/Steve Pugh had looked to be spoiling an Escort clean sweep until the final hairpin when their Sunbeam broke a stub axle and went no further.

Class 1 (up to 1400cc) included two ex-challenge Daihatsu Avanzatos, one crewed by Jon Madoc-Jones/Phil Kendall on Jon's first-ever tarmac surface stage rally as a driver. Problems with the engine not wishing to rev over 4000 saw them overcome for third spot by the Escort of Dave Baines/Nigel Stephenson. Arwyn Williams/David Roberts took runner-up spot in their 1300cc Sunbeam whilst class winner was always going to be Gareth Roberts/Paul Dolby (106 Rallye) finishing 14 th overall.

Best non-Escort, were 1600cc class winners Ken Pugh/Gwawr Hughes, the local driver again in his Sunbeam. Gavin Edwards/Rhys Morgan had been holding second spot until their Nova went off big style following brake failure on the fourth stage, Sean Crowley/Karen Morgan taking over and putting their road rallying Astra into the top ten. Ian Jones/Darren Thompson just missed a top ten placing but gained third in class in their 106 GTi.

A rare finish for the Focus T230R of Myfyr Owen/Geraint Jones saw them take home trophies for third in class. Second spot went to local crew Jonathan Whalley/Peter Dennis in an Escort Mk2 with the class winner being the Renault Clio Williams of Clive Williams/Ricky Pierce.

Just two cars contested the Road Rally class, both Vauxhall Astras, and saw Simon Bevan/Hefin West (Astra) take the class ahead of Paul Carroll/Justin John. Alan Evans/Alaw Roberts (Nova) won mixed crew awards.

The Formula 1000 category saw competition as fierce as ever, Matt Davies/Paul Hadley (Micra) led the class all day, but finished just two seconds up on Simon Povey/Jonathan Suter (Micra), the gap never being more than a few seconds as is customary. Peter Jones/Stuart Harradine (Micra) were third 14 seconds adrift.

Following Rob Eastwood/Martyn Taylor's clutch failure on their rapid Mini 970cc, fourth spot went to F1000 Chairman Tristan Dodd, son Alistair co-driving their Micra. Driver of the day was Steve King in the Talbot Sunbeam.
