North Wales Car Club

Ranges Stages 16th September 2006

Again this event took place in glorious weather conditions. 26 cars took the start on this event, which formed a part of both the ANWCC and F1000 Championships. The organisers took advantage of the low entry to run 18 stages instead of the usual 12.

Three Bala MC crews were entered, last years winner Geoff McQuilling at Car 1 in his usual Honda Civic, Car 4 Dave Pritchard / Em Hall in the Henblas Garage MK2 and at Car 7 Chris Phillips / Rhys Hughes in their 106 Cup Car.

The event ran smoothly, with the last 6 stages cutting out the car park section to give a variation. Dean and Wayne Jones led the rally all day and took a popular win. All Bala Mc crews finished, Dave and Em recording 3rd overall, Geoff and Sarah 4th overall and Chris and Rhys 7th overall. Simon Povey took the honours in the F1000 Class.

The top three from the event;

1. Wayne Jones / Dean Jones 28.49
2. Carwyn Ellis / Edgar Jones 29.07
3. Dave Pritchard / Em Hall 29.46

RANGES STAGES (MotorsportNews)

ANWCC Championship leaders Dean and Wayne Jones took a well-earned start-to-finish victory at Trawsfynydd Ranges, their Escort finishing 18 seconds ahead of the similar car of reigning Champions Carwyn Ellis and Edgar Jones. Local crew Dave Pritchard/Emyr Hall took third spot, their Escort 39 seconds further adrift.

The organisers had almost cancelled the event due to the low entry, but decided to continue and were granted authorization to run an additional six stages, so those who did attend certainly got value for money.

Geoff McQuilling/Sarah Manton led the field away in their Honda Civic, finishing fourth to take the class but could not match the pace of the Escorts over the ranges roads. Chris Phillips/Rhys Hughes gained second in the 1600cc class in their rapid 106 GTi, twenty seconds down on the Honda and 46 up on third placed Gareth Owen/Darren Thompson (205 GTi).

Jones/Jones took overall honours, so Ellis/Jones took the class win, second going to the consistent Kevin Jones/John Davies (Escort) tied for fourth overall with the Honda but one second slower on the first stage. Danny and Neil Postlethwaite (205 GTi) took third and their best overall result of sixth.

Pritchard/Hall won the over two-litre class, the only other finishers being Rhys Jones/Richard Birch (Impreza) in eighth spot.

Dubious honour of first retirement went to Jon Madoc-Jones/Lesley Bailey when their Nova blew its' engine a few yards into the first stage. They did get some mileage, however, as they switched to Lesley's Daihatsu and ran as course car for much of the day!

Keith Griffiths/Paul Hughes (Escort) seemed destined for a top spot until the electrics failed on the ninth stage, whilst Stephen Dukes/Steven Jones (Astra) broke a driveshaft on SS5, rejoined for the Trophy Rally and had a repeat retirement on SS10!
